Yoga has always been an activity loved by many adults and teenagers. Yoga is also an amazing activity you can do with your kid that has so many positive benefits. It is an amazing way to develop their gross motor skills which are vitally important. The positions often used in yoga help to target certain gross motor skills such as coordination, balance, and muscle strength. In addition to these amazing skills to develop, another great benefit of yoga is breathing techniques to slow and calm your breathing. Although this concept may seem advanced, it is really simple to teach our child yoga breathing techniques. Explain to them how when they get angry or upset their tummy and chest can feel tight and uncomfortable. They can use this breathing to help to calm down and relax both their mind and body. To do these breaths all they need to do in breath in slowly through their nose and out their mouths.

We loved that there is a huge variety of yoga positions to choose from. Here was one poster we picked out from Yoga for kids. Depending on the age of your child, the best way for them to learn is for them to watch you model the pose than try it for themselves. Your child may not be able to hold their pose for as long as you, but encourage them to try the pose for around 10 seconds each. For a beginner learner, you can choose positions such as cat/cow or downward dog that do not require too much balancing. As your kid becomes comfortable with some basic yoga positions you can introduce them to ones that begin to have a bit more challenge for them such as positions that incorporate twisting, balancing, or coordination. Remember that they are only learning and if they can not hold a pose or are doing it a bit differently that is okay, those gross motor skills are still developing! If you are not that comfortable doing the yoga positions yourself, there are a large variety of youtube videos geared towards children. Cosmic Kids Yoga is a great site that offers a tons of fun themes yoga videos your kids will love.
