Threading

Writer: Emily SaarEmily Saar

Although this task may seem very straightforward, it is an excellent way to establish those essential fine motor skills we use everyday for writing, buttoning, zippering, etc. This activity can be used in many ways to introduce some fine motor muscle building and precision. This activity also really helps to focus in on hand-eye coordination as your kid has to delicately thread the end through the hole. We loved how these ideas for threading use household materials that are very sensory oriented with different colours, textures, shapes. Using different materials that are more stiff and sturdy than thread makes this activity a lot easier to maneuver, before advancing to using string.

Depending on your child’s mood and what materials around the house, you can pick either of the threading activities we highlighted. Coffee Cups and Crayons use buttons as is great because it offers your child a variety of sized and shaped buttons to utilize. We loved how this adaptation allows for a base to be used as stabilization. This is a great modification if your kid is only just beginning to thread. But the challenge doesn't stop there, while using spaghetti it is important to be delicate in their threading to not break the pasta! If the idea of possible thread breaking seems too challenging The Ot Toolbox suggests using feathers as the thread. This activity is very similar but you are threading beads onto the feathers, which are a bit more reliable than the spaghetti. If these supplies are not available, pipe cleaners are another great thread alternative.
