Fine Motor Weaving

Writer: Emily SaarEmily Saar

Ever wonder what you can do with those pipe cleaners that are always lying around in your house? Weaving has been around for a very long time, and it is actually a perfect activity for your kid to practice those fine motor skills in their fingers and hands. On top of this, it is also helping to build hand eye coordination. JDaniel4's Mom and Hello Wonderful both suggested this super simple hands-on activity that only requires 2 materials: pipe cleaners, and a cooling rack or a colander.

To begin you can model how to weave with the pipe cleaners. Your weaving technique may differ whether you are using the cooling rack or colander. Once your kid has observed they can get right into it. They may not weave in a straight line, but that’s okay, no matter how they are weaving they are still developing those skills. If you are using the cooling rack you can expand on this activity and connect it to making patterns, depending on the colours of the pipe cleaners. If you are using the colander your kid may experiment with weaving through and across the colander. Once they have put as many pipe cleaners as they want, the activity is not over, they can have fun and pull all the pipe cleaners out! Some may be harder to get out if they are weaved through with other pipe cleaners. This may be a fun added challenge for your kiddo!
