COMMUNICATION
DOMAIN
At the preschool/kindergarten age, children can be all over the map with their communication skills, and it may not necessarily be related to their ability to read or write. Encouraging and modelling positive communication, both verbally and non-verbally, is an excellent place to start. Fundamental literacy skills, such as listening, understanding, describing, and retelling, can be built through a whole host of different activities. When you’re at home or in the community, try to encourage children to identify familiar sounds or letters, and work on practicing their conversation skills. Above all, cultivate a positive attitude towards literacy! Make reading an exciting time, and encourage them to tell their own stories. Your child’s creativity may surprise you; you never know what stories they can come up with.
