Pom-Pom Transfer

Writer: Emily SaarEmily Saar

This is a great low-key activity from Mom Brite to help develop a child’s fine motor skills in a fun easy manner. The pom pom transfer is a super simple activity that can have such a large positive impact. You may wonder how this skill is meaningful to the real world. This activity really hones in on a child’s fine motor skills of using tools, coordination, and patience. It helps to build up those small muscles we use to hold utensils to eat, and using other day to day tools and objects.

To begin, have your child with a spoon scoop up one pom-pom at a time, and place the pom-poms one by one into the muffin tin spaces. If your child is on the younger side, you can model how to hold the spoon and transfer the pom-poms. Once your kid has understood this main skill, you can begin to add different challenges or adaptations. For example you can provide them with different tools to transfer the pom-poms such as tweezers, chopsticks, or varying sizes of spoons. These tools require a different amount of focus and coordination to transfer the pompom without dropping it. If you want your child to develop those fine motor skills on their non-dominant hand, why not suggest trying to switch between using their left and right hands! Additionally, you can switch up the size of the pom-poms being used to create an added challenge. As you can see there are a ton of ways to adapt this activity to fit your child’s needs and skill range to develop those fine motor skills.
