Match and Create Shapes

Writer: Erica FrosstErica Frosst

Identifying shapes may sound like a cliche kindergarten activity, but it is a very important skill for young learners to have. There’s a number of ways to incorporate this into your lives at home; try pointing out shapes you see on a neighbourhood walk, or going on a “shape scavenger hunt” in your house or backyard. We also love the idea of making it into a game, like Toddler At Play has suggested with these popsicle stick puzzles. Our favourite part about making these is how easy they are to customize! If your child is only beginning you can use simple shapes such as a circle or square with only 2-3 pieces. If your child is wanting more of a challenge you can use more advanced shapes such as trapezoids and hexagon, or make the shapes more pieces such as 5-6.

For another variation, pull out the LEGO blocks (can you tell we love LEGO?) and some construction paper. How Wee Learn has written a great post with a whole host of simple-yet-fun activities to try out, and we recommend the LEGO puzzles. Simply create some shapes on construction paper and invite your child to fill the entire shape using LEGO blocks. Try adding additional challenges, like only using certain colours or sizes, for more advanced learners.
