Spelling Creations

Writer: Erica FrosstErica Frosst

Similar to practicing letter shapes, we love using fine motor activities to reinforce sight words and spelling patterns. There are many ways to try this, and they can certainly be adapted for the supplies you have on hand. If you have some pipe cleaners and letter beads, Lessons for Little Ones suggests inviting children to thread the beads on a pipe cleaner, using flash cards or words written on a piece of paper as a guide. For younger ones or those who struggle with fine motor skills, we like how The Happy Teacher suggests using cut-up pool noodles to visualize spelling. Finally, The Printable Princess offers a solution for that huge box of DUPLO taking up space in your playroom; use it as a tactile way to practice spelling!

Any of these activities could be extended by taking away the flash cards or guides, and instead challenging your child to spell a word they know just from hearing it spoken. Another great option is to invite them to find a book they can read and use it as inspiration for words. These activities are great ways to practice spelling with your child, and there are many more ways to use household materials. Have your own adaptation? We’d love to hear about it!
