The Five-Finger Friendship Challenge

Writer: Erica FrosstErica Frosst

Updated: Apr 3, 2020

When kids are away from their peers for extended periods of time, it can seem challenging to continue building their social skills. But with a little creativity, we can still practice compassion and friendship skills at home. Corner On Character has some great suggestions on how to initiate conversations with your little one about what makes a good friend. As an art activity, invite them to trace their hand on a piece of paper. Then, ask them to think about what makes someone a good friend. Prompt them with questions like “What do your friends do?” and “How do you try to be a good friend?” Write one quality of a good friend in each of the five fingers on the hand. You can use this to remind your child to be a good friend to their siblings or peers. This would also be a great tool for children to use both in and outside of school.
