Using Stories to Teach Social Skills

Picture books are a great way to begin to build social skills with your child. For example, a key aspect of social interactions is taking another person’s point of view, and it can be a challenge for many young ones. At home, try practicing this skill by reading a story with a conflict between two characters. Check in with your child as you read the book, asking questions like “Why do you think that person did that?”, or “What would you do if you were in the story?”, or “How would you feel if you were that character?”. We Are Teachers has a great post with lots of books for teaching social skills. Take a walk to the library and see what books you can find. When you are reading these books with your children, make sure to ask prompting questions as you go to check in with their understanding. Read the books a few times to reinforce the ideas, and go back to them often as a way to practice and keep the conversation open.
