Self-Control Bubble Activity

As a little kid there are temptations and impulses all around us. For example knocking over a friends tower or taking someone’s toy. If a child has not yet learned self-control they might not understand why they cannot do that. Self-control is an extremely important skill to have that begins to develop when children are little. Self-control is having the ability to regulate your emotions, thoughts, and behaviours when presented with either a temptation or impulse. For a little kid it can be very beneficial for them to develop a sense of control and restrain in these scenarios. We loved how easy this quick activity was from Love Laugh and Learning to help children with their self-control. All you need are some bubbles. Once you are outdoors you are going to blow some bubbles. Let the kids run around and pop as many as bubble as they like. Once the first round of bubbles has happened, explain that this time they have to try to resist the urge to pop the bubbles. They cannot pop a single one! To begin they can try to sit on their hands or hold them behind their back. Once the second round of bubbles has passed, explain that the feeling of wanting to realllllly pop those bubbles, and not doing so is self-control. You can give examples of when they might need to use self-control or ask them when they might have used it in the past. You can continue to go between the rounds. As you are doing so your child will be able to understand the concept and practice their self-control in such a fun easy way.
